The interdisciplinary Kabul Museum Project is an initiative resulting from the close cooperation between the National Museum of Afghanistan, Kabul, the former National Research Network - The Cultural History of the Western Himalaya (CHWH) as well as the Research Platform - Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Documentation of Inner and South Asian Cultural History (CIRDIS), both at the time directed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Deborah Klimburg-Salter. The financial support of the Gerda Henkel Stiftung (GHS), The Barakat Trust (TBT) Oxford and the UNESCO has enabled us to implement a series of different programs.

The Gerda Henkel Stiftung has financed a curatorial training program in art history, numismatics, computer science and museology for the Kabul Museum staff since 2005.

The Barakat Trust program was a capacity building program which provided financial support for intensive English language and computer science courses held in the Kabul Museum for the Museum staff, as well as bilingual secretarial support and English language training for the former Director, Dr. Omara Khan Masoudi. The program was formed in 2007, and the first lectures began in February 2008. The Barakat Trust Kabul Museum program has been an enormous success and has enabled the staff for the first time to gain the skills necessary to participate in international cooperations.

The successful cooperations and initiatives of the Kabul Museum Program could be continued and built upon with the current Director of the National Museum, Fahim Rahimi. We are currently in the process of formulating and implementing a new Curator Training Program.
